Hiwave (Original & Radio Edit)
A 2 track balearic / downtempo single (8m 19s) — released September 16th 2022 on Heard And Felt
Cy Gorman is a multi-genre, multi-instrumentalist, multimedia artist and producer from Melbourne, Australia. His previous releases have been embraced by Gilles Peterson, Jazzy Jeff, Bandcamp Weekly, KCRW, Triple J, Soil & Pimp Sessions, Hotel Costes and the labels behind BADBADNOTGOOD, Moonchild, Jordan Rakei, Allysha Joy and Quantic.
With this new single 'Hiwave', Cy (pronounced as in cy-borg or Si-mon) announces his forthcoming album of the same name, and perhaps even a new genre. So what is Hiwave? While the album will paint a fuller picture, here we have the sound of 70s/80s AOR/yacht rock/slow disco reprocessed through the nostalgic perspective of various internet electronica 'wave' subgenres (vaporwave, chillwave, synthwave, etc).
Having built the soulful slow jam groove on keyboards and production, Cy donned his rose-coloured glasses (see the artwork) and got himself in the mood to lay down a falsetto vocal, with lyrics and melody both fully improvised. The finishing touch was a sax solo with a difference. As Cy explains:
'I'm often exploring the integration of human and AI aesthetics in my art, including music. Here I chose to use a generative modular synthesizer to create a spontaneous interplay with my improvised sax solo, tweaking the sounds and their placements to create a hybrid organic-robotic vibe.'
Hiwave is recommended for fans of Brijean, Mndsgn, Louis Cole, Benny Sings, Toro y Moi, Masego, FKJ, Washed Out, Jungle and Jacob Collier.
